Computed Tomography (Scan)

A CT scan, or computed tomography scan, is a medical imaging test that uses X-rays to create detailed images of the inside of your body. CT scans are often used to diagnose a variety of conditions, including:

• Cancer
• Heart disease
• Stroke
• Brain injuries
• Bone fractures
• Infections

CT scans are also used to plan surgery and to guide interventional procedures.

The CT scanner is a large, donut-shaped machine. You will lie on a table that moves through the scanner. The scanner will rotate around you, taking X-rays from different angles. The X-rays are then used to create a series of cross-sectional images of your body.

CT scans are painless and non-invasive. However, you may experience some discomfort as the table moves through the scanner. You may also be asked to hold your breath for a few seconds during the scan.

The amount of radiation exposure from a CT scan is relatively low. However, if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant, you should tell your doctor before the scan.

The results of your CT scan will be interpreted by your doctor. They will discuss the results with you and explain what they mean for your health.

  • You may be able to go home immediately after the scan.
  • You may be asked to drink plenty of fluids to help flush the contrast dye out of your system.
