Mammography
Mammography is an X-ray examination of the breasts. It is used to detect breast cancer early, when it is most treatable.
Mammograms are painless and non-invasive. They take about 15-30 minutes to complete.
During a mammogram, you will lie on a table with your breasts supported by two plates. The plates will compress your breasts slightly to get a clear image. You may feel some discomfort, but it is usually brief.
The technologist will take two images of each breast, one from the side and one from above. The images will be reviewed by a radiologist, who is a doctor who specializes in interpreting medical images.
The radiologist will look for any abnormal areas in your breasts. These areas may be signs of cancer, but they can also be caused by other things, such as benign tumors or cysts.
If the radiologist finds anything abnormal, they may recommend a follow-up mammogram or other imaging test, such as an ultrasound or biopsy.
Mammograms are the best way to detect breast cancer early. Early detection is important because it can lead to more effective treatment and a better chance of survival.
Here are some additional details about mammography:
- Mammograms are recommended for women starting at age 45.
- Women with a higher risk of breast cancer may need to start having mammograms earlier.
- Mammograms are not always accurate. In some cases, they may miss a cancer or show a false positive.
- Mammograms are a safe procedure, but there is some risk of radiation exposure.
If you are a medical patient who is scheduled for a mammogram, you should be aware of the following:
- The exam is painless and non-invasive.
- It takes about 15-30 minutes to complete.
- You may experience some discomfort as the plates compress your breasts.
- You should not wear deodorant or lotion on the day of your mammogram.

The results of your mammogram will be interpreted by your doctor. They will discuss the results with you and explain what they mean for your health.
